About the Immune System

The immune system is the body’s defence against infectious organisms and other invaders. Through a series of steps called the immune response, the immune system attacks organisms and substances that invade body systems and cause disease.

The immune system is made up of a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body. One of the important cells involved are white blood cells, also called leukocytes, which come in two basic types that combine to seek out and destroy disease-causing organisms or substances.

In most cases, the immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. But sometimes problems with the immune system can lead to illness and infection. Some people’s immune systems function better due to diet, lifestyle choices or genetics, and some people will be more susceptible to infections than others.

Poor dietary choices such as a diet low in fresh fruit and vegetables (rich sources of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants), and high in sugar and processed foods, can negatively impact the immune system. A lack of exercise and a stressful lifestyle can also play a role in a lowered immune system.

Keeping your immune system strong is important throughout the year as it plays a significant role in our everyday lives.
